i actually don't mind how the events aren't in chronological order. it really conveys the sense of how all the years seem to bleed together and everything feels like it's all happening at the same time and what do you mean tiger king was three years ago it feels like yesterday, yknow? it helps to make a super chaotic song feel even more crazy.
I just saw a story on AO3 tagged "pet p!ay"
TIK TOK MUST BE STOPPED BEFORE IT DESTROYS LANGUAGE
Ok, unless something's going on I'm not aware of (extremely likely), I gotta point out the term "Pet Play" is significantly older than Tik Tok, or most of its userbase for that matter.
Yeah, I'm not mad about using the term "pet play". That's a perfectly fine term. I'm mad because they didn't use that term: they used "pet p!ay", a censored version
Oh. Oh gawd I missed that. Objection withdrawn, that is objectively terrible.
To anybody who is new to posting on ao3, if you’re using a tag you have to use the correct spelling of that tag. People aren’t going to type in every version of a censored word to hide or look for your content
For everyone new to tumblr, the same rule applies to tumblr too.
You cannot censor your tags! Censored tags cannot be block or filtered. Censoring tags HARMS your audience, it does not protect them
does anyone else hate that work takes up like 90% of your life and you literally are always working and have to form plans and important things and even seeing friends or eating meals around work. it's always just work. im spending my life just being At Work. i don't have time for hobbies or for seeing friends bc it’s always Work. like two days off a week isn't even enough because my days off aren't consecutive so i just spend those days exhausted or doing errands or house chores. there is not enough Time. all the time goes to Work. WHY IS LIFE THIS WAY. humans were not meant for this
look ive seen a lot of weird takes about the we didn’t start the fire cover because apparently (?) some people are mad (??) because ‘anyone can put together words that rhyme, they should have put the events in chronological order’ (????) and I’ve decided that look, it doesn’t matter if it’s chronological, because this is it.
It’s events that matter to this generation, and it SHOULDNT sound exactly like billy joel’s version. they’re not going to be billy joel. NO ONE is going to be billy joel. the point of a cover is to make it your own and by making the events out of order it seems more frenzied and crazy, which, to be honest, the events it covers ARE. it IS crazy. and to end with ‘world trade, second plane’? that is INSANE. I got chills. that is a moment that the people who were alive during the event will remember FOREVER. it literally changed the entire course of history and started a spiral of events not only politically but musically as well, starting in an idea and ending in we’ll carry on. It makes perfect sense to end a song about the chaos of the modern and recent world on an event so defining in people’s- relatively recent- lives.
and I saw this pointed out too (I believe by @thekintsugikid) and I wanted to mention it. fall out boy says, ‘we’re trying to fight it.’ In Billy’s version, he said ‘we tried to fight it.’ and look. we are trying. The world is going to shit. We’re all going to die someday, probably in some gruesome way. but we’re trying. we’re trying to fight it. we have hope, this younger generation. we won’t give up. we will survive. persistence, I think, is the biggest part of glory.
and so, it just means something to me. it doesn’t have to be in chronological order. it doesn’t have to be perfect. the boys had fun, and that’s what matters, but I really think that the cover does reflect us overall
PLUS, it's a whole phenomenon these days with people having difficulty keeping track of the chronology of things. Back in the day it was a lot easier because world news came through either radio, the newspaper, or the evening news, and there was only so much of each topic that could be covered in the space allocated, AND, it took a certain amount of time. You would only get the news on radio or TV during the Allocated News Times, and anything in the paper happened at some stage before midnight yesterday, so there was always something of a delay in receiving news. AND, because there was limited space, they could only cover limited topics. Big stories would be covered, but smaller or more regional ones might not be. Certainly not globally. The newspaper would have the widest array of stories but even they could only cover so much.
So the way people received information about the world was a lot more... paced, I guess? Relatively condensed doses, received in a predictable time frame, about a restricted range of topics.
Whereas these days we get our news from EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME, IMMEDIATELY. Technology means we have access to a historically-never-before-seen range of news almost instantaneously. When there was that explosion in Beirut in 2020, I heard about it MINUTES after it happened, despite being on the other side of the world. We also get large AND small stories, from countries all over.
We now have such unfettered, swift access to news of all kinds from all places that it means events blur together. Like, that's an actual phenomenon being experienced worldwide.
Did This Historical Event happen five years ago, or a decade ago? What do you mean This Historical Event happened in the same year as That Historical Event? How has it only/already been x-many years since Historical Event? And so on.
So FOB not listing events in the order they happened is a great move, actually, because it reflects how our collective recollection of events is all jumbled up and out of order.
Also I can't believe people are bitching about this?? Like. Even without it being a clever move that reflects society's experiences with the passage of time and the confusion of mental timelines, it also like.... is not even a huge deal?? So the events are out of order, so what?? The song is still an absolute banger that covers THIRTY FOUR YEARS OF EVENTS and feels like a genuine follow on from the Billy Joel version in both sound and vibe. People just like complaining about silly shit, I swear.
Also-also, "we're trying to fight it" has me all kinds of emotional. We're trying to fight it. There's so Much, and soooo much of it is bad, but by God we are trying to fight it. And we won't stop trying to fight it. God.
Not to reblog from you who reblogged from me who reblogged from you again but your tags made me say YEAH
"They didn't include [thing]" ok???? It's thirty four years of events. Do you KNOW how many events there were in that 24 years????
There's loads of shit they didn't include. Theres loads of shit that Billy Joel didnt include everything.
If you wanna include your Important Historical Event, then you can go write your own version of the song (and see if YOU can get 211k views in 10 hours on just one of like 6 different platforms, btw)
50 tips for (fanfic) writing
- have fun
- write whatever is interesting to you, even if it won’t be interesting to anyone else
- appreciate kudos when they come, but don’t expect them
- appreciate comments when they come, but don’t expect them
- if you wish you could just write that one scene you have in your head, do that. you don’t need to create a 30K backstory for it first.
- embrace one shots
- embrace drabbles
- embrace writing your story out of order
- rough drafts are meant to be rough. if you can’t think of a word, put in a placeholder for it and keep going.
- try not to get stuck on the little things
- it’s okay if your readers can’t see the picture inside of your head
- some people work well when they have a posting schedule. some people work well when they don’t. it’s okay if you don’t know which kind of person you are, and it’s okay if the type of person you are changes over time.
- if a rule you created for yourself isn’t working for you, get rid of that rule.
- make fandom friends. even if they don’t read your fic, they’ll cheer you on while you write it.
- cheer on other writers you know. you’ll be cheering yourself at the same time.
- no trope or genre is better or worse than another one. they all just appeal to different audiences.
- quality and popularity are not the same thing, although they do sometimes overlap
- numbers and statistics will never tell you whether or not you’re a good writer. they will never tell you how valuable you are as a person.
- you belong in fandom if you want to be there
- you’re a writer as soon as you start writing things
- writing and posting are two different things. your story is still worth writing, even if you never plan to share it
- you don’t need to apologize for what you write or what you post.
- don’t worry about taking up too much space. the internet doesn’t have a maximum size.
- keep your readers in mind when you’re tagging your content. how could they search for your fic? if you use a tag, will be a reader who loves that tag be satisfied with how much it appears in your story?
- if you have a relationship in your fic that plays a minor role, tag it in the Additional Tags section instead of the Relationship section so that people who love that ship don’t get their hopes up
- be cautious when looking at bookmarks on your fic. they aren’t “extra comments.” that’s a space where readers make notes for themselves and each other, not for authors.
- you don’t need to know everything about canon before you start writing fic
- you don’t need to read fic in the same fandoms you write for
- you don’t need to read fic at all in order to write it
- love your work because sometimes you’re the only one who will - and that’s okay
- if your hobby starts feeling like a job, you might need to take a break before you get burnt out
- if you get stuck on a story, you can always start a new one
- if you fall out of love with a story, you can always stop writing it. if you’re worried about your readers, you can always give them a bullet point summary of where you were planning to go with thing. for a lot of people, that’s satisfying and provides closure
- if you get hate, report it
- use the tools at your disposal to block hate before it can come in (limiting or turning off comments, limiting or turning off asks, blocking users, etc)
- try replying to comments sometimes. it can be a lovely way to make fandom friends
- don’t be afraid to reblog your own writing posts.
- if you get stuck on your summary, just write 1) who the story is about 2) what they are doing and 3) what problem gets in their way
- notice when your writing makes you smile. that moment is a gift. enjoy it.
- notice when your writing makes you cry. that moment is a gift, too.
- even if you’re disappointed in how your story turned out, there’s something in there that’s fantastic. find that thing and focus on it and feel proud.
- some ideas are ones you want to write. some are ones you want to read. if you ever have too many ideas to deal with at once, give some of the latter ones away to someone else.
- sometimes the things you write will be really personal. be careful about putting them where other people can comment. they won’t know how personal it is for you, and you need to remember that comments aren’t about you, they’re about the story.
- remember that you can write series as well as stories. if the story is done but you still have passion or ideas, start a new one in the same universe.
- enjoy the satisfaction of finishing a story. savour it. bask in it a little while.
- don’t feel guilty about abandoning a story. not every story gets finished, and that’s okay
- you can have separate accounts for different fandoms. you can have one account with a million fandoms in it. do whatever works for you.
- sometimes writing is more important than sleep - but only sometimes
- it doesn’t matter if that story has been written before by someone else. it doesn’t matter if it was written by you. write it again.
- only follow the advice that makes sense to you. the rest isn’t important.
suddenly viscerally remembered when I was in first grade and decided that “I got a boo boo” was too childish of a way to communicate to my mom that I’d gotten hurt.
I was a bookish kid though, so instead I switched to “mommy, I’ve been wounded” which in retrospect must’ve been a little odd to hear from a six-year-old.
“He has kill’d me, mother: Run away, I pray you!”

*hugs you real tight* Would you please send this to ten people on your dash? Make sure someone gets a hug today!💜
🥺🥰 Awww thanks! *Hugs you back too!*
